Ruined market street of Bhangarh Fort
After dark

Haunted Rajasthan

Cursed forts, villages emptied in a single night, restless princes and whispered cries in the ruins. These are the legends Rajasthan tells after the sun goes down — and the real history behind them.

We share these as folklore. All visits are by daylight and follow site rules.

India's most famous haunted fort

Bhangarh Fort

Alwar district ≈85 km from Jaipur · 2 hrs

The legend

Two legends explain why this 16th-century town was abandoned. In one, the ascetic Guru Balu Nath allowed the town to be built only if no building ever cast a shadow on his retreat — when a palace storey did, the town was doomed. In the other, a sorcerer who fell for Princess Ratnavati cursed Bhangarh as he died, condemning it to ruin.

The history

Built in the late 16th century by Raja Bhagwant Das, Bhangarh was a prosperous town of temples, havelis and a busy bazaar before it was deserted in the 18th century.

Visiting

The Archaeological Survey of India does not permit entry before sunrise or after sunset. Our visits are always during the day.

The village that vanished overnight

Kuldhara

Near Jaisalmer ≈18 km from Jaisalmer · 30 mins

The legend

Local lore says that in the early 19th century the Paliwal Brahmins of Kuldhara and dozens of neighbouring villages left in a single night to escape a tyrannical state minister — and laid a curse that no one would ever settle here again. The roofless houses have stood empty ever since.

The history

The Paliwals farmed this harsh desert for centuries with clever water harvesting. Today Kuldhara is a protected heritage site with restored houses you can walk through.

Visiting

Open during daylight hours. Pair it with Khaba Fort and the Sam dunes for a full desert day.

A deserted village watched by peacocks

Khaba Fort

Near Jaisalmer ≈35 km from Jaisalmer · 45 mins

The legend

Khaba was another of the Paliwal villages said to have been abandoned overnight. Its small fort still keeps watch over hundreds of empty homes, and only the peacocks that gather at dawn break the silence.

The history

The fort houses a small museum of fossils and artefacts found in the area, and its ramparts offer sweeping views over the ruined village.

Visiting

Best visited in the soft morning light, when the peacocks are most active.

The fort a restless spirit wouldn't let be built

Nahargarh Fort

Jaipur Above Jaipur · 30 mins

The legend

When Sawai Jai Singh II began the fort in 1734, legend says the work kept crumbling overnight. The cause, people said, was the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia, a prince whose land it was. Only when a shrine was built for him — and the fort named in his honour — did construction succeed.

The history

Nahargarh guards the ridge above Jaipur alongside Amber and Jaigarh. Inside, Madhavendra Bhawan holds nine identical suites built for the king's queens.

Visiting

Come in the late afternoon for one of the best sunsets over the Pink City.

Echoes of Chittorgarh's tragic past

Rana Kumbha Palace

Chittorgarh Fort ≈115 km from Udaipur · 2 hrs

The legend

Chittorgarh's history is marked by sieges and jauhar, the self-immolation of Rajput women facing capture. Local legend links the palace's underground chambers to these events, and guards and visitors tell of voices and cries heard among the ruins after dark.

The history

The 15th-century palace was the residence of Rana Kumbha and, by tradition, the birthplace of Maharana Udai Singh, founder of Udaipur.

Visiting

Visited by day as part of Chittorgarh Fort. Please treat the site, and its history, with respect.
