Udaipur, Rajasthan Tourism
Udaipur, the city of lakes, is called the Venice of the East. With good reason too. It has the romance, the spirit, the passion of Venice. And yet, the ambiance is definitely Eastern. There are no singing gondoliers, but you do have palaces built on beautiful lake islands. The city was built on the banks of the beautiful Lake Pichola, which saved it from the desert barrenness that is part of so many other towns and cities of Rajasthan.

Attractions

Lake Palace

Built on the secluded Jag Niwas Island in the beautiful Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh. Once home to royalty looking for a summer break, today this palace houses a 5-star hotel.
City Palace

Located on the shores of the Lake Pichola, the City Palace was built by Udai Singh. The palace has three massive gates – the Bari Pol, Hati Pol, and Tripolia. The palace is well maintained and offers visitors a peek into a bygone era.

Bagor ki Haveli

Once the residence of the prime minister of Mewar, the Bagor ki Haveli is a lavish mansion built in typically Rajasthani style. More like a palace than a “haveli”, or mansion, Bagor has over 100 rooms.

Shilpgram

A shopper’s paradise, Shipgram is a bazaar where local artisans display and sell their wares. You can purchase items crafted in wood, terracotta, and metal.

Lakes

The lakes are the lifeline of Udaipur. Apart from Pichola, the other major lakes are Fateh Sagar, Rajsamand and Jaisamand. All the lakes have been constructed by damming rivers and harvesting rainwater. A system of canals link the lakes.
