Jodhpur, Rajasthan Tourism

In the medieval ages, Jodhpur was the prosperous and powerful stronghold of the Marwar rulers. It was a port city that attracted travelers from around the world. While the Marwar kingdom has long gone, and the port city has fallen off the radar of traders, the rich history, beautiful havelis, and the grand Meherangarh Fort still attracts tourists from far and wide.

Attractions

Meherangarh Fort

Meherangarh Fort was built to shelter opulent palaces and bustling bazaars of Jodhpur. And it did its job well for centuries. The exteriors of the fort can be a little intimidating, for what you see is a grim rock structure that rests on top of a sheer cliff. Once you enter the fort however, you are in another world altogether.

Jodhpur

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Compared to the fort and other palaces, the Umaid Bhawan Palace is not very old, having been built only in the early part of the twentieth century. The palace was the result of the generosity of the then maharaja, Umaid Singh, who employed people on the construction of the palace to provide relief from a famine ravaging the state. This huge palace has a staggering 347 rooms, and houses a 5-star hotel today.

Museums

To get an idea of how the maharajas lived, all those centuries back, head to the Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum. This museum displays the weapons, jewelry, and other items that were once part of the royal stash. The Meherangarh Fort Palace Museum is another place to visit if you are looking for a slice of Jodhpur’s history.

Palaces

The older palaces within the fort are the Moti Mahal, and the Sheesh Mahal. The Moti Mahal houses a delicately carved throne that was once used for coronating kings. The Sheesh Mahal is famous for its mirrorwork, and the Daulat Khana holds a collection of royal treasures.
