Jaipur is known as the Pink City, thanks to its pink washed buildings. The city happens to be the capital of Rajasthan, and home to some of the most splendid monuments and palaces in the region. Jaipur was established by Sawai Jai Singh II, whose twin passions were astronomy and mathematics. Jai Singh was an extremely able tactician, apart from being a first class astronomer, a fact that saved his city from the repeated violence that Mughal rulers were infamous for.

Attractions

City Palace

The City Palace is located bang in the middle of the city. The palace has three large gates. The majestic Tripolia, so named because of its three arches, is the grandest of the gates. Humble tourists today, though, must content themselves with an entrance made through the Atish Pol. The massive Palace encloses within it smaller apartments, bazaars, and gardens. The Chandni Chowk and Gainda Deorhi are some of the major landmarks within the Palace.

Hawa Mahal

The Hawa Mahal is the prime attraction of Jaipur. It is located within the City Palace. The Hawa Mahal once housed the women in the maharaja’s harem. The windows, carved in the stone façade, give a gauzy appearance to the structure.

Jantar Mantar

This is an astronomical observatory built on the specifications of Sawai Singh II. The stone structure is intricate in its detail, and offers testimony to the genius and skill of the raja.

Ram Niwas Garden

This is a garden different from any other garden you might have visited before. It houses a zoo, a bird house, and herbarium. It even has a museum and sports center. Ram Niwas continues to be a center of cultural activities and events even today.

Elephant Festival

The Jaipur Elephant Festival is a major attraction for visitors. If you are in the city during the month of March, be sure to attend the event. Apart from folk music and dance, the event features a procession of elephants and camels.

How To Reach Jaipur

By Air : The Jaipur Airport handles domestic flights from New Delhi, Mumbai, and other parts of India.

By Train : You can opt for regular trains from Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Udaipur to Jaipur. You can also take a tour on the famed luxury trains of Rajasthan.

By Road : A network of roads connects Jaipur to New Delhi and other major Indian cities. You can travel by bus, luxury bus, or private taxies.
