Rajasthan City Guide
Alwar was established by Rao Pratap Singh in 1775. The king brought surrounding areas under control to create the state of Alwar. After Pratap Singh’s death, however, the state descended into anarchy. Because of poverty, people took to crime, giving rise to the feared dacoits of Alwar. Maharaja Jai Singh in the latter part of the nineteenth century created a system of law and order and brought the state respite from crime and anarchy. Alwar was the first Indian state to sign a treaty with the British East India Company.
Alwar also retains traces of its Mughal past, from the time before Pratap Singh had won control of the area and expanded its territory.
